Phonology

Pengertian fonologi

  1. How are sounds organized into syllables in phonology?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. With the use of phonological trees syllables are broken up more easily. Syllables are made up of a rhyme and an onset (any consonants before the rhyme). The rhyme made up of a nucleus (the vowel sound(s) in the syllable, the key component of all syllables) and a coda (any consonants following the nucleus).

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. by the way Phonemes are very different sound units in a language (the smallest sound unit). For example, 'pat' and 'bat' differ in their first phoneme: "p" and "b". Vowels are also phonemes, so "pat" and "pets" are different from phonemes too (But phonemes don't always match spelling!). When two words differ by one phoneme, they are known as minimal pairs.

  20. What's is the difference between fonetic and phonology? Aren't both learning about sound? So wha's the main different?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Phonetics is the science concerned with the study of the sound system in the human language in general. Phonology, however, is the science concerned with the study of the sound system in particular languages.
The question, and the answers so far seem to take for granted that there should be a phonology/phonetics distinction. But there is also a minority view that the distinction itself is questionable, see Ohala (1990): http://www.linguistics.berkeley.edu/~ohala/papers/no_interface.pdf and Lindblom (2006): https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Bjoern_Lindblom/publication/236682007_Rejecting_the_phoneticsphonology_split/links/00b49518feb99dfe70000000.pdf
The distinction becomes even more blurred when it comes to speech prosody. There the phonemic principle illustrated above by Georgios P. Georgiou, for example, cannot been easily applied. In the most popular theory of intonation phonology, units like pith accents, phrase accents, etc., were established without knowing what kind of contrasts they make in terms of meanings (Pierrehumbert, 1980). See also Xu et al. (in press) for more discussion.

    2. Uhhh LoL your explanation makes me even more clueless πŸ˜… why is it so long? Can't you explain using your own language? your language is very difficult to understandπŸ˜‘

      Hapus
    3. Phonology is, broadly speaking, the subdiscipline of linguistics concerned with "the sounds of language".
Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that comprises the study of the sounds of human speech.

      Hapus
    4. So would you like to give example that contain a difference of phonology and phonetic?i hope you want to help me to understand about phoneticπŸ˜‡πŸ™

      Hapus
    5. phonology is the science of the vocabulary of languages and their distribution while phonetics studies how the phonetic sounds of a language are realized or pronounced. phonetics also study the workings of human organs, especially those related to the use and pronunciation of languages.

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. In our paper "Sound to meaning mappings in the Bouba-Kiki effect." we've created hundreds of nonsense words with the aim of determining how the various phonemes contribute to attributed meanings (related the object shape). I don't have the other papers handy, but in our paper we reference several papers that similarly attempt to isolate/characterize how various phonemes are related to meanings. Some reads I would recommend 1) Nielsen, A., & Rendall, D. (2011). The sound of round: evaluating the sound-symbolic role of consonants in the classic Takete-Maluma phenomenon. 2) Magnus (2001) What's in a Word? Studies in Phonosemantics 3) Fort, Martin and Peperkamp (2014) Consonants are More Important than Vowels in the Bouba-kiki Effect
Most of these papers focus on specific sound-to-meaning mapping (e.g. sound-shape mapping)
The thesis by Margaret Magnus takes a more comprehensive look at how sounds in English are mapped to a variety of meanings.

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Phonology is the study of human speech so that it can produce sounds. Benefits of phonology in language preparation:
Spelling is a regulation for the representation or symbolization of sounds of words of a language. Because the sound of words is two elements or segmental and suprasegmental, the spelling also describes or symbolizes the two sound elements.
Symbolic elements of word sounds do not only symbolize word sounds in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and kalmia, how to decapitate syllables, how to write abbreviations for people's names, symbolic scientific symbols. This suprasegmental element is known as punctuation or punctuation. The procedure for writing these words can utilize the results of phonological studies, especially the results of phonemic studies of the language concerned. therefore the results of a phonemic study of a language are called phonemic spellings.

The same process that occurs in the compilation of human minds produces and receives language that occurs in machines. One example of a decoding machine language is the popular intelligence system, Siri.
